Every Disney Cruise Line itinerary to the Bahamas or Caribbean ends with the same question: Which private island experience is waiting for you?
Starting in 1998 with the inaugural sailing of the Disney Magic, Disney Cruise Line has operated its own private island in the Bahamas — Castaway Cay, a 100-acre slice of paradise in the Abaco Sound. For decades, this was the only game in town: pristine beaches, family-friendly character experiences, and a cookout lunch included in your cruise fare.

Then came Lighthouse Point — Disney’s second private destination, debuting in 2024 near Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Opened as a brand-new destination for the Disney Wish-class ships, Lighthouse Point brings a completely different energy: adults-only beaches, overwater cabanas, and a UNESCO-protected coral reef ecosystem that makes it feel genuinely remote.
If you’ve sailed Disney before and only know Castaway Cay, you’re walking into Lighthouse Point blind — and that’s a real shame, especially for repeat cruisers who are looking for something fresh.

Castaway Cay: The Original Disney Beach Day
Castaway Cay is a purpose-built cruise destination — the moment you step off the gangway, you’re in Disney’s world. The island is compact enough to walk everywhere, with a small fleet of golf carts for those who prefer not to stroll.
The port area features Scat’s Cat (a beach bar famous for its rum runners), a post office where you can send postcards with a Castaway Cay postmark, and the Pelican Point tram that loops to Serenity Bay.
Family Beaches: Castaway Cay has three main beach areas — Family Beach (steps from the ship), Teen Beach (Scenes Beach) for ages 13-17, and Nautilus Watersports Area with kayaks, paddleboards, and aqua cycles for rent.
Serenity Bay: The adults-only beach (18+) features lounge chairs, umbrellas, a dedicated outdoor spa and massage cabana, and a beach bar. Perfect for parents who want to decompress while kids are at the Oceaneer Club.
Character Experiences: One of the most unique things about Castaway Cay is the Character Beach — where Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy appear in beach attire for meet-and-greets. This is one area where Lighthouse Point cannot compete.
Lighthouse Point: Disney’s Newest Paradise
Lighthouse Point is Disney Cruise Line’s second private destination, located on the southern tip of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. It opened in 2024 with the Disney Wish, making it the newest cruise destination in Disney’s portfolio.

The design philosophy is notably different from Castaway Cay. Where Castaway Cay is optimized for high-volume family crowds, Lighthouse Point was designed with ecological sensitivity and a more relaxed atmosphere as core principles.
Overwater Cabanas: The signature experience at Lighthouse Point — with panoramic ocean views, private deck, and direct ocean access via ladder. Cost $400–$600 per booking and book up quickly.

Ecological Highlights: The destination is adjacent to an area that Disney has worked with the Bahamian government and conservation organizations to protect, including a healthy coral reef system and sea turtle nesting areas.
Which Ships Visit Which Island?
Castaway Cay: Disney Magic, Wonder, Dream, Fantasy
Lighthouse Point: Disney Wish, Treasure, Destiny
Ship class determines your destination. All Dream-class and Magic-class ships visit Castaway Cay. All Wish-class ships visit Lighthouse Point.

The Bottom Line
Castaway Cay is the classic Disney beach experience — well-established, family-optimized, with character meets that kids genuinely remember. It’s ideal for first-time cruisers and families with young children.
Lighthouse Point is the fresh, premium evolution of the Disney private island concept. Beachfront in this case. It’s quieter, more scenic, more nature-focused, and the over-water cabanas make it genuinely special for adults. It’s the better choice for repeat cruisers, couples, and anyone sailing on a Wish-class ship.
